Supreme Court Removes Additional Registrar Over Case Management Error

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has removed Additional Registrar (Judicial) Nazar Abbas due to a significant error in managing cases. Several important cases, including challenges to the Customs Act of 1969, were mistakenly assigned to a regular bench instead of the constitutional bench, causing a waste of time and resources. The issue was discovered after the cases were heard on January 13, 2025. The judicial branch acknowledged the mistake and sought a review. A committee, led by the Chief Justice, concluded that these cases should be handled by the constitutional bench. In response, the SC directed the registrar to ensure more careful handling of cases in the future.https://www.geo.tv/latest/586634-sc-additional-registrar-removed-for-fixing-cases-to-wrong-bench

Additionally, during a contempt proceeding against the additional registrar, former Supreme Court Bar Association presidents were appointed as amici curiae (friends of the court). They will assist in addressing the issue of court jurisdiction. The case will be heard by a constitutional bench on January 27. Meanwhile, some cases scheduled for January 22 have been removed from the hearing list.
