expressing strong condemnation over the harassment of journalists, the filing of false FIRs against them
Islamabad (hum Gawah)
President of the Working Journalists Association, Shahid Akhtar Awan, has submitted an application to the Chairman Senate of Pakistan, expressing strong condemnation over the harassment of journalists, the filing of false FIRs against them, and the judiciary’s actions undermining freedom of the press and the rule of law.
In his plea, Shahid Akhtar Awan emphasized that press freedom is a cornerstone of democratic societies, yet in Pakistan, journalists face constant challenges and pressure while performing their professional duties. He noted that taking the viewpoint of a complainant or party is an essential journalistic responsibility, but turning it into a crime by registering cases is a blatant violation of the Constitution, the law, and fundamental human rights.
Highlighting a recent incident, Awan pointed out that last month, after including the perspective of complainant Sultan Afser in a program, false applications were filed to initiate a case against him. He termed this not only a grave attack on press freedom but also a direct contradiction of judicial rulings, in violation of constitutional and legal safeguards for freedom of expression.
He appealed to the Chairman Senate to take urgent notice of the matter and to ensure effective measures against harassment and intimidation of journalists, so that the sanctity of press freedom can be safeguarded.
