PTI Rejects Justice Afridis Nomination as Chief Justice Protests Planned
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has rejected the nomination of Justice Yahya Afridi as the next Chief Justice of Pakistan and plans to protest against the decision made by the Special Parliamentary Committee. PTI leader Hamid Khan criticized the nomination process, claiming it could create divisions within the Supreme Court. He expressed hope that Justice Afridi would decline the position.

In response, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal defended the nomination, stating it was based on merit and that skipping the seniority principle isn’t unusual. The parliamentary panel, which PTI boycotted, made the decision after two closed meetings. The current Chief Justice, Qazi Faez Isa, is set to retire on October 25, prompting urgency in appointing his successor. New rules require the top judge to be chosen from the three most senior judges with a two-thirds majority from the committee.
