PMLNs Constitutional Amendments Stalled by JUIF Opposition

Senior PML-N Senator Irfan Siddiqui stated that constitutional amendments in Pakistan cannot proceed without the support of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman. Fazl has rejected a controversial draft aimed at reforming the judicial and parliamentary systems, although he did not raise specific objections to certain aspects like the constitutional court or the appointment of judges.

Siddiqui noted that there are multiple drafts circulating, and he hopes Fazl’s version aligns with the government’s proposals. He emphasized the importance of Fazl’s backing, as the ruling coalition lacks the necessary votes to push through the amendments—short by 13 in the National Assembly and nine in the Senate.

The proposed amendments include extending the tenure of Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa, who is due to retire in October. Despite efforts by the PML-N and PPP to win over Fazl, the government has postponed the tabling of the amendments indefinitely. Following a recent luncheon hosted by former NA speaker Asad Qaiser, Fazl reiterated his rejection of the government’s draft, asserting it was only shared with select individuals.
