In response, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal defended the nomination, stating it was based on merit and that skipping the seniority principle isn’t unusual. The parliamentary panel, which PTI boycotted, made the decision after two closed meetings. The current Chief Justice, Qazi Faez Isa, is set to retire on October 25, prompting urgency in appointing his successor. New rules require the top judge to be chosen from the three most senior judges with a two-thirds majority from the committee.
