Key Meeting to Nominate Pakistans Next Chief Justice
A 12-member Special Parliamentary Committee is set to meet today at 4 PM to decide on Pakistan’s next Supreme Court Chief Justice. Formed under Article 175A of the newly passed 26th Constitutional Amendment, the committee will hold an in-camera session to nominate the Chief Justice for a three-year term.
The committee includes senators from major parties, such as Azam Nazeer Tarar (PML-N) and Farooq H Naek (PPP), as well as National Assembly members like Khawaja Asif and Ahsan Iqbal. With a coalition government holding a two-thirds majority, they aim to finalize the nomination quickly, as current Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa retires on October 25. The committee will recommend a nominee from three senior judges: Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah, Justice Munib Akhtar, and Justice Yahya Afridi.
The Journey of Democracy in Pakistan
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif described the amendment as a significant milestone for the country.
