Pakistan Railways sets record: Longest freight train run
Pakistan Railways achieved a milestone by operating its longest freight train, spanning 2,500 feet with fifty coaches. Pulled by a powerful GE U40 locomotive engine, it transported over 3,000 tons of cargo from Karachi to Kotri. This move aims to ease road traffic and reduce pollution, contributing to environmental preservation.
In the fiscal year 2023-24, Pakistan Railways saw a significant revenue increase, reaching Rs50 billion in the first eight months compared to Rs32 billion last year. CEO Aamir Baloch credited the dedication of railway workers for this achievement and projected revenue to reach Rs80 billion by year-end.
To enhance services, Pakistan Railways plans to acquire 230 passenger coaches and 820 High Capacity Wagons under the Public Sector Development Programme. This initiative aims to improve train speed and punctuality. Currently, 46 Completely-Built-Up (CBU) coaches have been acquired, with the remaining 184 to be manufactured locally, capable of traveling at speeds up to 160km/h.
